DJ MADA

My name is Adam Loatman (DJ MADA) and I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Santa Fe, NM. When I was 8, my uncle introduced me to the turntables and hip hop as a whole. Since that moment in time, it has been my life. In ’94-’97, I went to school in Arizona at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Science. There, I obtained my Recording Interning Degree. At this time in Arizona, I was seeing my first underground shows from artists such as: Common, Hieroglyphics, The Roots, Mystik Journeymen and many more! Arizona was an awesome time to get my feet wet and to see what I really wanted to do. Through school, I moved to the Bay area where I interned for Chris Smith (Afro Mystic), the CEO of OM Records. There, I got to hang out with everyone from Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Jazzbo, Doze Green, TWIST and King Britt to name a few. It was at this point that I had absolutely found and solidified my niche in life……MUSIC. I took advantage of what was going down in the Bay area. Everybody was doing their thing. Invisibl Skratch Piklz were at Deco’s every Thursday. Future Primitive was just beginning. Living Legends were selling their CDs on Telegraph next to Hobo Junction, Hieroglyphics and many others. This was the prime of hand-to-hand “underground” artists to self-promote themselves and such a beautiful time for hip hop! I made efforts to document everything possible with the music so that I could pass down some of the history to the younger generations.
