Michel Montagne, the dj alias of Dutch music photographer Michel Mees, was weaned on music's underbelly. Smitten with the sounds of post-punk bands, he had his breath knocked out of him by the dark drone of Gira's controversy-ridden Swans. Joy Division and the Cure likewise got under his skin. Michel Montagne's Bio
Michel Montagne, the dj alias of Dutch music photographer Michel Mees, was weaned on music's underbelly. Smitten with the sounds of post-punk bands, he had his breath knocked out of him by the dark drone of Gira's controversy-ridden Swans. Joy Division and the Cure likewise got under his skin. Add to this cheery apocalyptic crowd electro-industrial formations Coil and Front 242, and you'll get an inkling of the feeding ground for the hypnotic, shadowy moods Michel Montagne draws from his decks today. Forget the idea of a swoon that's exclusively subterranean, though. He still loves the thrill of French Kiss by Lil' Louis. This happily undulating, rhythmic mother of heavy breathers from 1989 was the first house record he owned.
In the mid-nineties his love of dance music ultimately landed him a spot on board Bassic Groove. For this legendary but now sadly defunct dance zine he photographed a slew of techno gods like Derrick May, Sven Väth, Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier. The photographs he took led to assignments for music magazine Oor, dj's and record companies. The music he heard was something else altogether. He realised turntables offered him the chance to do with sound what his camera allowed him to do with visuals. Better still, they did. He's since been playing his decks at venues around home base The Hague.
His current musical tastes run wide. His mixes are infused with dark electro and frenzied techno, sometimes gliding into trance, here and there touching on the minimal. Running through it always that rising swell of hypnotic plaintiveness. Good music is all about feeling after all.

Maar ook vroege elektronica als Front 242 en Coil behoren tot zijn muzikale bagage. Eind jaren tachtig kocht hij zijn eerste house plaat. Lil' Louis' French Kiss. De liefde voor (dans) muziek brachten hem als fotograaf midden jaren negentig in contact met het legendarische magazine Bassic Groove waarvoor hij al snel de een na de andere Techno God fotografeerde. Derrick May, Sven Väth, Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier zijn slechts enkele van de vele namen die hij voor de camera kreeg. Uit interesse naar de muziek die deze dj's draaiden begon hij platen te kopen en al gauw kocht hij zijn eerste draaitafels en was hij verkocht. Zijn huidige muzieksmaak valt niet echt in een hokje te stoppen. Al kan je zeggen dat de vrolijke noten ver te zoeken zijn. Donkere elektronica, opzwepende techno, soms trancy, soms minimaal, maar altijd met gevoel en een zekere melancholie.
