There have been times in my life where I listened to nothing but Oldies, or New Wave, HipHop, House or even Rock. I actually started DJing back in 1995. My friend started this DJ crew called 2 Extreme. Pretty 90's i know. Anyways, I was actually supposed to be the manager type guy and get us the gigs. Well one thing led to another and eventually I became the DJ. I Don't know how. It just happened. So between 95 and 99 we did lot's of little gigs like house parties and such to help pay for new and better DJ gear as well as college tuition. Around the end of 1999 is when I changed my DJ name to Mike Marvel and started getting serious about DJing. This is when I started doing the club scene. It was a crazy good time when club djs would be rockin' 3 turntables and vinyl was the standard.
In 2004, me and some friends opened up a vinyl record shop that catered to the hiphop DJ. We called it "B-Side Records". The 3 and a half years I owned it were some of the best years of my life. I got to meet all types of cool people in the music and DJ industry and made many friends. However in mid 2007, I decided to sell the shop. It was at this time that I also pretty much retired from deejaying. Sure I still deejay a mobile gig here and there but back when I ran B-Side, I was gigging like 2 or 3 nights a week at night clubs alll over the Bay. I guess I just got tired of the scene.
Nowadays I work a 9 to 5 heading the Marketing department for a Bay Area Solar Panel manufacturer. I still enjoy making the occasional mixtape now and then. So keep an ear out on mixcrate as I upload my archived mixes as well as some new and interesting stuff!
