Everlasting BASS 2 Year Anniversary

EB2YR_2

On April 2, 2010 the largest collective of lady DJs I have seen (18) will be getting down at the Everlasting BASS 2 Year Anniversary at 111 Minna in San Francisco. Founders DJ Zita (Golden Soundscapes) and Pam the Funkstress (The Coup) along with newly added resident Similak Chyld (FTC/Peaches) will be joined by Celskiii, Deeandroid, Daneekah, Green B, Stef, Lady Lu, RRS Feed, That Girl, Jenicyde, Leydis, Mamabear, Lady Fingaz and Umami. I shot over some questions about the event to Zita so she could let the Mixcrate community let us know what’s up the 2 year anniversary.

Mixcrate: Zita!!! What’s up sister? Thanks for letting me rock with you and Dmadness at Golden. That was hella fun! And thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview. I know you and Dmadness got some gigs this weekend in Southern California. These questions will be more specific to the Everlasting BASS 2 year anniversary.

First off, how did you manage to pull this huge roster of ladies? Are they folks you have met over the years?

DJ Zita: It was not difficult at all for me to pull together these talented lady DJs who I have mad respect for. By being a woman DJ and promoter for over 10 years and by the line-ups I have assembled for Everlasting Bass in the Bay over the last two years, I have a strong network from which to choose these ladies. Every month for Everlasting Bass, I book one to three women DJs or performers, but for our anniversary, I go all out by pulling together all of the Bay’s women DJs to spin together under one roof. That is my mission for starting B.A.S.S./Bay Area Sistah Sound in the first place: to create solidarity in the DJ sisterhood.

MC: It looks like having a venue Like 111 Minna with 2 rooms will allow you have this many DJs spin. I see a ton of vendors too. What’s the toughest part organizing an event as like this?

Z: I chose 111 Minna because of the fact that it has 2 rooms. Last year, for the Everlasting Bass 1 Year Anniversary, it was at 330 Ritch and I had 10 lady DJs on the bill. I was able to pull that off by giving everyone 20 minute sets. So many more women DJs have entered the scene in 2009, so this year, I sought out a venue with at least 2 rooms.

Honestly, the goodie bags are the toughest part about organizing an event like this. There will only be two vendors selling BASS and Mixerfriendly tees; those logos on the flyer are sponsors who have donated giveaway items for the goodie bags. Everything from seeking sponsorship items to include in it, to the picking up of items, to getting and stuffing the bags themselves all require that extra time and energy. In the end, it’s all worth it because of the collaborations I have the opportunity to build with the Bay’s creative, businesses-minded folks like Abigail and Debbie of MADE Jewelry, Leilani of Sistargirl, Evan of Adapt/Ava Domina, and Justin of Mixerfriendly, as well as how happy attendees are at the events to receive a bag full of dope goodies plus our latest mix CD! Other tough, time-consuming parts for me are: mastering and doing the artwork for our mix CD and making the anniversary slideshow that will play at the event. Again, it’s all worth it to me.

MC: What’s the best part?

Z: Hands down, the best part is all the women DJs spinning together on one night, under one roof. I remember last year at our 1 year anniversary, I was introducing some of the women DJs to each other because they had not met yet. When I do that, I see my mission of B.A.S.S. materializing as the building of bridges between other women artists happens.

BassInYoFaceVol2 MC: Tell us about BASS In Yo Face Vol. 2. How was it like to put your style, Pam’s style and Similak Chyld’s style on the MixCD?

Z: The mix is divided in 3rds, has 53 tracks, and we each got to represent our own flavor. It starts out with a classic reggae mix by me, then a R&B/hip hop mix by Pam the Funkstress, and finally Similak Chyld closing it out with her uptempo hip hop/latin remixes. I’m placing them in the goodie bags, so make sure you cop one at the event this Friday. I have one on reserve for you, OwlBoogie.

MC: Yayur! Where do you see Bay Area Sistah Sound in 5 years?

Z: Two words: World Tour.

MC: Was Snayk Eyez the first dude ever to spin at Everlasting BASS?

Z: No, Tap 10 DJed for Josie Stingray’s set in Sept. 2009, so Snayk Eyez, who DJed for Hopie Spitshard’s set, is the 2nd dude.

MC: You think I can get a paparazzi pic with all 18 of you? Ha!

Z: Good luck! I tried getting a paparazzi pic last year with only 10 DJs, and it’s hard getting everyone together for that. If you do manage to get one with all 18 DJs though, OwlBoogie, then I will personally get each lady to autograph it for you. :)

Excellllllennnnnt…. Thanks Zita, we’ll let you get back to your hectic schedule.

Here is a vid of last year’s event.
