Tha’ Juke Joint Representing Hip Hop On SoCal AM Radio

thajukejoint_200pxyup. that’s right. we said AM radio.

Something very special and unique is goin’ down here in the IE (that’s the “Inland Empire”, for all of you non-SoCal readers, the region covered by San Bernardino & Riverside counties). Every weekend, hosts Eternal Tranzmit, Almanac & Mic Flex banter about a wide variety of topics on their weekly hip hop talk show. “Tha’ Juke Joint” is broadcast live on KCAA 1050 AM every Saturday afternoon between 4 pm and 6 pm, then archived as podcasts on the station’s website.

This most definitely ain’t your morning zoo or 5 o’clock traffic jam. The hip hop that is interspersed throughout their broadcasts is (thankfully) not mainstream. The conversation is intelligent and authentic, and aims to represent hip hop culture in a positive light and dispel the negative myths that are typically associated with it. Space is at a premium inside the KCAA studio (oddly situated above a more-or-less deserted mall in San Bernardino), so on-air guests typically call in. Local talent, especially from “the 9″ (another alias for the IE), is given a lot of love here, but the show is also visited by several national (sometimes surprising) artists as well.

Recent guests have included 90s-era rapper Skee-Lo (surprise!), activist & multi-talented MC Supa Nova Slom (from 1/22), IE hip hop crew the Magnificent Ruffians and Em’s former DJ, DJ Green Lantern (from 1/29)

Out of KCAA’s reach? Don’t trip – you can subscribe to their podcasts or download their weekly episodes directly from the KCAA website. For now, to give y’all a taste, here’s quick clip from last Saturday’s show (R Kelly vs Keith Sweat – roflmao):
