I've been a DJ since 1987 and used to DJ with a group called One Live Beat from Union City, CA in the Bay Area. During that time, I looked up to DJ's like Cameron Paul (106.1 KMEL) and DJ Qbert. I always tried to attend the showcases and battles like Imagine and AA Productions. I won my first and only battle in the early 90's. I stopped DJing in 2000 and if it wasn't for digital mixing tools like Serato, Torq, etc., I probably would have never got back into it. Personally I use Torq and I still use vinyl. I got back into it in January of 2010 and fortunately for me, I was able to get my old turntables (Technics SL-1200MK2) back from my younger brother who I gave to 10 years ago! I'm glad that I am able to DJ again because music is something that I've always loved and had a passion for.
Currently I'm a student at http://www.qbertskratchuniversity.com/ and I'm refining my skills as a scratch DJ and turntablist. I believe that once you learn how to beat match and mix songs, (which I learned in the late 80's) it is something that a DJ will never forget how to do. Personally, I also feel as a DJ you never stop learning and being a student of the element because learning how to scratch and use the turntable as an instrument will take any DJ to the next level.
