Before the term Hip Hop R&B was coined, there was New Jack Swing--a trans-formative force that blended the two genres like a high top fade. Times were "Coolin." Mary J Blige and Jodeci were background singers for Father MC. Bobby Brown was known more for classic hits than Bobby and Whitney (RIP) tabloids. Uni-brows were socially acceptable as long as your name was Al B. Sure. Everyone dude had a shag, every chick had a suit coat with large shoulder pads, and every singing group had one member who served no apparent purpose because they never sang lead and weren't in the production credits. People actually knew the names of background dancers who were usually related to the artists for whom they danced.
Classic films like House Party and New Jack City were cranked out. And the best sketch comedy show was In Living Color. Producers like Teddy Riley and Foster and McElroy cranked out hits like Melky Cabrera.
The vitality of New Jack Swing lives through the timelessness of the records. The genre is perhaps the only associated primarily with black musicians since Motown to have that degree of unadulterated pop crossover appeal.
